Thorn

2017

The vision:Thorn was created while brainstorming for a book i'm in the process of writing. He is a strong character representing the masculine, in a vulnerable and almost tragic state. His skin is like birch bark and his blood is made up of gold. He is the guardian protector of the Earth and the rose. His structure represents the Resurrection of Christ like energy, sacrifice for Love.

Design process: Starting from a vase for a flat base, I put together a basic shape of a human body using tap and newspaper. I then began to layer it with paper mache and plaster. There was a lot of drying time in between layers. The final layer was paper clay, a mix of plaster, glue and moist paper towels. Once I was satisfied with the structure, I then began detailing with more paper clay, drying, sanding, molding. Drying. Paint, shading, adding thorns, more paint, gold, more plaster. Until finally the outcome was a 50lb beautiful male structure, shielded with an armor of thorns and a single rose.

The Rise of Venus

2017

The vision: The rise of Venus came to me instantaneously. I had never before sculpted and this character wanted life. She is the essence of Earth and the make up of all that lies deep within her. I wanted to portray a natural and raw effect placing emphasize on her nature but also accentuating her purity and innocence, along with her strength and elegance.

Design process: No sketches, I went straight for the build. I knew what I wanted and began piecing together the base by using recycled objects. Once the structure looked right I began taping the entire body, covering her like a mummy. Her hair is made up of paper covered in tape that I crimped up in my hands to portray a seaweed effect. From there I made a mixture of paper and plaster and covered the body. For each layer it took several days to dry. Once this process was done I applied more plaster to set the raw materials (shells, sand) and then chose my colour scheme. I wanted her to look like she was surfacing, so left her face pale and dripped blues over her body indicating her rise out of the ocean. Gold leafing detailed the ends of her hair while sand was dusted over her crown and face, with traces down her neck and breasts. This is the moment she takes her first breath and rises from the deep.

The Maiden

2017

The vision: The maiden came to me after creating the rise of Venus. A story line was taking place in my mind and she is the result of the Venus in human form. I wanted to portray her beauty and femininity, revealing traces of the ocean within her. And what better way then to drape it over her body and wear it as a dress.

Design process: I used pieces of a wooden art figure model to form the shape and base. I then created the head and arms out of paper, tape and a mixture of paper and plaster for the surface. Once she was sculpted and hardened, I sanded her carefully and glued on the paper to form her dress. Once the flow looked right, I applied the plaster mixture to the dress in layers, allowing each layer to harden.I then chose my colour scheme to match her raw form (the rise of the Venus) applying traces of sand in her hair and at her feet, as though she just walked out of the ocean waves.
I wanted to reflect the innocence about her, with a poise of wonder and curiosity. This is where she takes her first steps out of the deep and into the world before her, with the ocean as her dress.
